Special Kids, Special Schools need special transportation
Organized by: Osiel Saez
There are private services that transport kids that don't otherwise qualify for district/gov. bus service due to the distance or specialty of the school they attend. In this particular case the school is Pepin Academies in Tampa, FL. The kids that attend these schools are not there by choice! these are very specialized schools for developmental disorders such as Aspergers and related forms of autism. The efforts these families have to make to live a "normal" life are astounding. In addition to the difficulties of raising an autistic child, many of these families are single mom duos already on some form gov aid that does not cover transportation. As a result many of the much deserving kids in need of these schools are forced back into public school/ Special Ed programs. These public programs are seldom equipped to offer the level of attention and dedication required to provide a fighting chance for long term existence and independence in adult life. I hope to establish a fund raiser program to subsidize or fully cover the cost of transporting the most deserving families. The help would be made available to those families in need based on their financial position. One fool proof criteria would be free or reduced lunch eligibility. The service is paid directly to the provider on a weekly or monthly basis. Any unused portion of the funds raised would be carried to the following school year. The need never ends.
