Ted and my family got involved a few years ago with a new ministry at St. Luke Church in Long Valley, NJ focused on kids and young adults with physical and mental developmental challenges. The goal of the St. Luke Special Needs Ministry is to provide an inclusive spiritual, social and educational environment for children and adults with special needs and their families.
The cornerstone of the Special Needs Ministry is a monthly Mass focused on children and adults with special needs and their families, regardless of religious affiliation. Afterwards, children and adults with special needs engage in games, craft activities, music and other social interaction specifically designed to enhance social and physical development. During this time, parents/caregivers have an opportunity to talk, share and exchange ideas and resources in a group discussion lead by an experienced professional.
Additionally, the Special Needs Ministry sponsors children and adults with special needs to journey to Lourdes, France for the annual special needs pilgrimage sponsored by the Pilgrimage Trust. Over 7000 children and helpers from all over the world gather for the week-long event.
Through the Special Needs Ministry, I have seen and experienced the wonderful gifts, talents and joy that each and every one of us has to share and contribute.
If you would like to support the Special Needs Ministry, you can write a check to St Luke Church - Special Needs Ministry or contribute through CrowdRise by donating to the American Special Children's Pilgrimage Group. www.ascpg.org. Please include "St. Luke 605" in the note with your contribution. No donation is too small. For more information, please visit http://www.stlukeparishlv.com/ministries/special-needs-ministry/
