BENEFITING: Special Olympics Massachusetts
ORGANIZER: Special Olympics Massachusetts
EVENT: 2015 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 20, 2015
Why did I decide to run the Boston Marathon …..?
I am inspired by Special Olympic Athletes who push themselves every day and even more so when they compete –on the field, the court, in the pool or on the slopes – they overcome so many physical, emotional and mental challenges …. I decided I would push myself to the limits in their honor.
I have been involved with Special Olympics since May of 1998, when we learned that our son James had Down syndrome. At that time we had no idea what was in store for us, for Jimmy or for our family. We had no idea how lucky we would be to have Jimmy in our life, to watch him grow (and grow he did – now at 17 years old he is 5’ 10” and 180 pounds!) We also had no idea how our lives would be forever changed by our involvement in Special Olympics of Massachusetts.
We have been privileged to share in the joy of an athlete making her first basket – and to witness the tears on the parents’ faces as they watch with pride and amazement …. We’ve been encouraged by the cheering of the fans on a cold fall day at The Governor’s Academy – as students and faculty cheer on the Special Olympic soccer teams at the State Tournament … We’ve participated with pride as our entire school community competes in the School Day Track and Field Games … It all brings a smile to my face and tear to my eye … and the joy goes on …
So it is with these wonderful memories in mind that I endeavor to run a distance 5 times further than I have ever run in the past … if the Special Olympic athletes can do it I can at least give it my best!
I hope you will consider supporting me as I run the Boston Marathon to benefit Special Olympics of Massachusetts – and perhaps be inspired to join me in being part of this wonderful organization!
Thank you very much!
