On August 5th, I will be participating in the Steve Belson Memorial Ocean Mile Swim to help raise funds for ALA’s Spectrum Scholarship program and promote diversity in libraries. I will be swimming in in Rockaway Beach, NY in memory of Cynthia Clark, former associate dean of libraries at Adelphi University and Director, Collections and Circulation Operations at The New York Public Library. I greatly admired Cynthia for distinguished service in librarianship. Every year for the past ten years I have swam in support of this program.
As a Spectrum donor, you directly support leaders working to:
- Ensure that all people, communities and their humanity are reflected in our archives and cultural institutions.
- Position libraries as gateways not gatekeepers for immigrants, refugees, and undocumented students.
- Build strong professional networks that support retention and establish brave spaces for honest conversation about how much still needs to be done.
Help ALA keep serving as a powerful voice for our future. Please consider making a contribution and supporting my 2017 swim for Spectrum!
