Digit is a young female Sperm Whale who lives in the eastern Caribbean near the island nation of Dominica. She became entangled in a rope, now wrapped around her tail slowly killing her. We must try to save her! By supporting this campaign you will make it possible for a whale rescue group to travel to Dominica and find Digit in the waters where she is seen most frequently. The line is cutting into her flesh, undoubtedly causing pain and clearly causing her to slowly starve. Her health is declining, visible from her emaciated body and more parasites on her sides than any healthy Sperm Whale should have.
Your donation will be matched up to the first $3000 by Cheesemans’ Ecology Safaris (http://www.cheesemans.com) and photographer Martha Stewart (http://marthapix.com)
The disentanglement and rescue attempt will be coordinated by Center for Coastal Studies, Massachusetts, USA, undertaken by trained rescuers. There is no guarantee of success but we must try! The line is thin, and can be removed safely with a hook knife on a pole or other disentanglement gear, if we can get the right trained people closer to her. All funds will go to direct costs for disentanglement efforts including logistics, boat charter, gear and food for the rescue crew. Any funds left after a (hopefully!) successful rescue will be put towards training and equipping rescuers to save the whales.
PLEASE NOTE: we cannot guarantee success; this is a rescue and disentanglement attempt that depends on getting government permission, securing a boat, getting all materials and people needed in Dominica at the right time, finding Digit, and successfully approaching her in order to remove the rope that encircles her tail. With your help we will try. Thank you.
