This is my 14th year of participating (I wanted to write competing, but that would imply we had speed) in the Golden Gate Relay, a 200-mile relay run supporting Organs-R-Us, a charity raising awareness of organ donation, and the cause remains as close to my heart as when we first started, almost 2,800 miles ago. My sister's kidneys failed while she was in her 30s so she understands first hand the medical and psychological implications of multi-year waiting lists. I’m happy to report she was the recipient of a plump and healthy kidney several years ago, making the journey from Scotland to participate in The Relay with our team in 2014.
The weekend of April 30th/May 1st I, and 11 of my looniest friends, will be running from Calistoga to Santa Cruz. While I’d love to have you join us, the roster has already been filled by individuals sporting more SpongeBob paraphernalia - and shockingly shiny disco pants - than anyone over the age of 6 should possess, but there are other ways you can help:
- Register to be an organ donor: http://www.organdonor.gov/index.html
- Donate to help save a life
My hope is that neither you nor your family will ever need the services of hand-me-down organs, but you can bask in the good karma of helping those who might.
Thank you for your support - Rhiannon
