A Leadership Journey
Organized by: Akeem Lloyd
March 06, 2017
My name is Akeem Lloyd, and last June I had the opportunity to travel to South Africa as part of a leadership team with the help of many friends.
I was able to embark on what ended up being a life changing experience. While in South Africa, I kept asking myself, what can I do for the youth to add to their holistic development? By providing opportunities for the youth through travel, leadership activities, and self-reflection workshops, we are able to maximize the overall totality of their development.
This life changing experience is what drives me to create a life changing experience for the 8 young people that I have been mentoring and supporting academically and holistically through my youth program, Lifting Individual Futures Together. The Leadership Service Journey to Johannesburg, South Africa will consist of several components. One component of the Journey will be student-led cultural exchange activities. They will conduct educational workshops, as well as work side by side with local residents to participate in community service.
The students will work together to facilitate team building activities, and participate in Youth Day, a day where over 300 youth gather to acknowledge the students who lost their life during a peaceful protest. The leadership team is working really hard with our Brothers and Sisters from South Africa to create this opportunity. Completing this task is not an easy one, so we NEED your help. Your donation will help change the trajectory of a young person's life. Your support will allow a young person to see the opportunities that are beyond what they perceive to be reality. Upon my return from South Africa I was asked how my trip changed my life. I responded by sharing the fact that I am already thinking about how to go back with young people. I hope to ask these students the same question and hope that they too will have experienced a life changing moment.
To help us reach our goal, no donation is too small. Please consider supporting our cause, and help us create the change we wish to see.
Our goal is to have the total amount of funds raised by April 14th. If our campaign just so happens to fall short of our financial goal, we push our trip date to June, 9th 2018. I look forward to sharing this Ripples of Hope Initiative with you all via pictures, videos, and blog posts.
