A Leadership Journey
Organized by: Maya Francis
My name is Maya Francis and it is a privilege for me to sit on the leadership team with an amazing group of young adults who are passionate and driven to change the lives of young people.
Since I was younger every day I have made strides to beat the odds, to go against the status quo and excel far beyond what I can ever dream or imagine. This wouldnt be possible if it weren't for the people that believed in me and what I was capable of becoming. They motivated me and guided me through this journey of life. It is my duty; it is my passion... to do the same.
When the opportunity was first presented to me to be a part of the planning committee for the Ripples of Hope Initiative to take youth to Johannesburg South Africa during the summer of 2017, I was elated, yet I knew it would be hard work. But work that would without a doubt, change their lives.
By engaging students in leadership activities, cultural exchange initiatives, community service and self-reflection workshops, we are able to maximize the overall totality of their development. It is our hope that not only will they leave empowered but inspired to make a difference in their own communities.
One of my favorite quotes reads, "When you've worked hard, and done well, and walked through that doorway of opportunity, you do not slam it shut behind you. You reach back, and you give other folks the same chances that helped you succeed." - Michelle Obama
I hope you find it in your hearts to give to open the doorway of opportunity for the youth to succeed, not only for themselves but for so many others that will follow behind them.
