Southside Sports Center is a vital new sports complex for serving the community, especially the youth of the south side of Kauai. Kauai Christian Fellowship is the founding, parent organization, a not for profit/nondenominational Christian church that puts a high emphasis on serving young people and adults. We have extremely active outreach programs for children and teens, with many of these students coming from at risk environments. Population to be Served: The south side of Kauai is home to nearly 10,000 people. We currently touch about 7% or about 700 of the population weekly with our various ministries. We anticipate adding several hundred more to our serving circle with the addition of the gym/sports center. Program/Project: We are soon finishing a 13,000 sq.ft Gymnasium with college standard courts that, along with extra classrooms, will provide the community with a much need location for sporting activities. Part of the building serves a duel purpose as a FEMA approved hurricane shelter that will serve the entire south shore community in the event of another disaster such as Iniki. Goals and Objectives: • To provide a much-needed sporting complex on the South side – This would be accomplished by the creation of the gym that we are designing to be available to various sport groups. (Note: there is only one other small gym facility in the region. There is nothing under roof for Koloa, Omao or Poipu). • To provide additional space for our expanding youth ministry – The rooms provided within the gym complex allow for us to better serve the teens for ministry purposes as well as having a location for sports right at hand. • To provide a FEMA approved hurricane shelter for the community of Popiu and Koloa – Using strict FEMA standards our architect has designed one end of the building to withstand winds of up to 180 miles per hour. As we currently do with Tsunami warnings, we would open campus to locals and visitors during emergencies. • Outreach: Working with various sporting groups, many of which our members are involved in, we will easily get the word out about this new addition to our community and how people can utilize it. We believe that the option to host sport activities will add several hundred people to our campus each week. These will be added to the nearly 200 children and teens who make up our current programs. • Evaluation: As we are creating a new opportunity, the process we will use to implement use of the gym facility will be to contact various individuals within our congregation who are involved in sports and work with them to implement sport events that dovetail with the goals and mission of the church. Our effectiveness will be measured simply by the increase in numbers and activities taking place on our campus as well as lives being touched. • Cost: We have raised over a million dollars and have enough to finish the building, but need over $10,000 for the sports equipment, such as College regulation basketball baskets, 4 other side baskests, as well as Volleyball, Futsal, Pickleball equipment. A sustainable revenue plan via sports league play will help raise maintenance cost and ongoing development. Please consider $50, $100 or whatever you can so we can make available a sports complex for our youth and adults in our growing community. Mahalo!
