BENEFITING: NEHEMIAH COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT CENTER INC
There are over 2 million S.T.E.M. and technology-based jobs available in the U.S. and not enough qualified individuals to fill those jobs. According to 2012 U.S. Census, less than 5% of minorities realize the importance of STEM and technology. Our goal is to expose and enrich at-risk and disadvantaged youth to the robotics, technology and engineering fields. This early exposure will prepare a more competitive workforce. Over the past eight years, we have provided STEM summer camps for over 250 youth. Our campers knowledge of robotics and technology increased 75%. We've also increased career awareness in these fields. While conducting one of our first STEM camps, one 10 year old commented - "You mean that if we had little robots, then when the towers fell, all those fireman and people would not have died. The robots could have went in to check." That one comment made me cry and I said to myself - "HE GOT IT". It's so fulfilling to see the light bulb come on for the youth we serve. We also realize that consistent exposure is the key. Our goal is to provide FREE summer camp for economically-challenged households this year; develop a minority robotics team to compete in the FIRST Robotics Competition and to develop a S.T.E.M. Academy in North Carolina. Then to implement academies in disadvantaged areas and communities around the U.S. to give our younger generation a fighting chance to gain and attain technical ability, scientific observation and engineering skills. These activities, in turn, will develop and prepare a more competitive workforce for society. Our ultimate goal is to spread S.T.E.M. Literacy to help fill those 2 million STEM and technology job openings right here in the U.S. We are 'EDUCATING FOR THE 21st CENTURY & BEYOND !
