THE STORY:

Richmond Metropolitan Habitat for Humanity wrote -

Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build program brings together women from all walks of life to address the housing crisis facing millions of women and children worldwide. This Spring, Women Builder’s will be working on three homes in the City of Richmond! All funds raised here, will go towards our Spring Women Build fundraising goal to support these projects.

Through Richmond Habitat’s homeownership program, Habitat families purchase a safe, healthy home and pay an affordable, zero percent interest mortgage, making the dream of homeownership a reality for them and their children.  Currently, all three homeowners are completing 10 financial and homeownership education classes and attending monthly one-on-one budgeting sessions to make sure they have the tools they need to be successful homeowners.  They are also working to complete 350 hours of “sweat equity”, or volunteer time, helping to build homes and working at our ReStore.

KAYIMBULA HOME:

The Kayimbula family are refugees from the Congo. Due to extreme civil unrest and violence in their home country, they fled to the United States.  Vianney and Immaculee want nothing more than to provide their 5 children with the safety and security that a home can bring.  Both parents work for Henrico County Schools in order to provide for their large family. Currently, they are living in a very small, overcrowded apartment in Henrico. Their new home will allow them a much larger, more comfortable and more affordable space to live and grow. The family cannot wait to move into their beautiful new home in 2017, a home that will help to give them the peace, safety and tranquility they’ve never experienced before.

BROWN HOME:

Ms. Brown is a hardworking, single mother of twin nine year olds Ashley and Anthony.  Ms. Brown is visually impaired, but has not let that slow her down.  She has worked as a switchboard operator for 21 years at the Virginia Eye Institute and enjoys helping others with their vision needs.

In their free time, the Brown's enjoy reading, listening to jazz music and playing video games together.

Her children cannot wait to move into their beautiful, healthy and safe new home right in time for the new school year!

SCOTT HOME:

Jessica Scott is proud to say that her greatest accomplishment in life is her intelligent, kind-hearted and energy-filled 9-year old daughter, Keniya.  Jessica has devoted the last nine years to making sure Keniya has every opportunity in life, working full-time as a Performance Quality Analyst at Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield.

Recently, because of high rent costs and increased violence in her apartment complex, Jessica moved back home with her mother into a small, two-bedroom home.  Currently, Jessica and Keniya are sharing a very small bedroom without much space for privacy.  Jessica worries that as Keniya gets older, she’ll miss out on experiences most children get having their own space to play, think and grow.

Luckily, Jessica found out about Richmond Metropolitan Habitat for Humanity’s homeownership program from a friend.  She took a chance, applied and was accepted.

“I will have a stable place for my daughter and I,” said Jessica, “Thank you for making my dreams a reality!  My daughter and I are grateful to just have the opportunity!”
