THE STORY:

Spring Hill Horse Rescue runs Community Response Teams across VT that respond to large animal cruelty complaints in their local areas. On ice covered roads, in dark barns and trailers, these women (so far the teams are entirely comprised of women) go and check on reports of horses, cows, goats and other animals in trouble. Sometimes finding animals in the most horrific conditions, the women who make up these teams are single minded: help the animal, whatever it takes. Whether it's raising the level of care the animals get in their current homes, or getting the animals out immediately, these woman are brave and uncompromising.

How do I know this? I'm one of the them. People tell me they're going to shoot at me, people tell me they'll get their guns and kill all of their animals right then and there. Regardless of what they say to me, I don't budge or get shaken (until later). I end up doing what I came to do; and that's help the animals.

We have trained 7 new large animal humane agents in Vermont in the last year and a half. Every one paid for their own training. Everyone uses their own personal vehicles, pays their own mileage, and when a horse needs something, whether it's hay, or de-wormer, or a blanket, we just get it. We try not to take away from what we know the horses at the rescue need.

I'd love to fund these teams. We could use emergency kits for horses, money for supplies like de-wormers, halters, lead ropes, blankets, vet tests, and reimbursement for mileage. We could use emergency kits for humans; each team really needs a camera, and a pack with forensic equipment (weight tapes, thermometers, signs, markers, evidence bags, SD Cards, etc.). We do document crime scenes.

I have to say I work as a volunteer with pretty fabulous women who go out in the dark of night into scary situations, where we know people have guns and where there are animals in trouble that need us. These women deserve gas money and a few supplies!
