The Man & Woman of the Year campaign is a national 10-week fundraising competition to raise funds to support the mission of LLS. The local male and female candidates who raise the most funds, are then awarded the Chapter's title of Man & Woman of the Year. This year the Upstate New York/Vermont Chapter of LLS is campaigning in honor of the local Boy & Girl of the year, Lucas Santoro (Age 3) and Kendra Sisco (Age 16), each a brave survivor of blood cancer.
Over 40% of new cancer therapies approved by the FDA from 2000-2014 were first approved for blood cancer patients. Each year more and more treatments that were originally designed and tested for blood cancer patients are being tested and applied to other cancers and serious diseases, including breast, colon, and pancreatic cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, and Parkinson's disease.
Last year alone, LLS:
invested $67.2 million in research.
funded $41.8 million in co-pay assistance to blood cancer patients.
funded almost 7,800 customized clinical trials.
responded to over 60,000 inquiries through the LLS toll free Information Resource Center (IRC).
matched over 1,000 patients with trained volunteers who have firsthand experience with blood cancer through the LLS first connection program.
and much more!
