BENEFITING: Iowa Kidstrong, Inc.
Debuting in 2010, See-Us Run Des Moines (SRDM) is a program that uses marathon training to help young people succeed in life. We do this by connecting students with adult mentors who help them imagine and accomplish goals beyond their dreams, including the completion of a marathon, a feat less than 1% of the population in the U.S. has achieved.
SRDM features a progressive training schedule taking participating students from mile zero all the way through completion of the Des Moines Marathon in October 2013. During the training season, the students commit to train three times a week, and on the weekend they come together along with the adult volunteers for a longer run in area neighborhoods and on local trails.
Along the way, students participate in races around the community of varying distances building toward the marathon, giving them experience with running events, keeping them engaged in the program, and giving them the opportunity to interact with others in a positive way.
See-Us Run Des Moines was piloted in 2010 at Roosevelt High School in Des Moines. At the commencement of the SRDM pilot at the Des Moines Marathon on October 17, 2010, eight students completed the full 26.2 mile marathon and five more completed the 13.1 mile half marathon.
SRDM has continued successfully since. In 2011, 15 students completed the Des Moines Marathon and two completed the Half Marathon. In 2012, 18 students completed the marathon.
We're looking to get even more to the finish line with our 2013 program. And YOU can help us get there!
