EVENT DATE: Mar 18, 2012
Back in September I attended an informational meeting for a group on my school campus called Students Run LA. There were 50 energetic high school students eager to sign up for a year of running all leading up to the Los Angeles Marathon in March. In the past I have thought about taking on the challenge of running a marathon but I have never fully committed. When I looked around the room and saw all of these students, many who can't even afford running shoes, excited to commit to training I knew I had no excuse. It was time to sign up!
So began my journey with the Animo Pat Brown Charter High School Students Run LA group. During our first practice I ran with a junior girl who will be completing her third marathon this year. She told me, "there is nothing like the feeling you get when you cross the finish line, you feel like you can do anything!" We run together Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays around the park by our school in the Florence neighborhood of Los Angeles. Since we began we have run a 5K, 10K, 2 1/2 marathons and still have more races to go! Some of my favorite moments from the year have been running the Homecoming Football game ball 8 miles through South Los Angeles to kick off the start of the game, finishing our first 1/2 marathon together and the day our students were given a pair of brand new Nike running shoes.
The students and 4 other teachers I run with are truly inspiring and have kept me going through the pain of marathon training. I have been a teacher for 5 years and coached for over 10 but this experience has been the most memorable. I can literally see these students changing for the better with each run we do.

SRLA provides 3,000 teens across LA a 26-week mentoring and physical fitness program. SRLA teaches them to set and achieve goals by preparing them to complete the Honda LA Marathon. While running is the core activity of the program, SRLA students learn that discipline, persistence, and hard work lead to success...both at the marathon and in life.
Join us to support these tremendous young people as they embark upon the journey of a lifetime...to the starting line (and finish line) of the Honda LA Marathon! All funds raised will go towards supporting future student runners it costs about $350 per student to complete a full season of SRLA, including race entry fees, new running shoes and transportation to and from all of the races. THANK YOU for your support of this great organization!
