BENEFITING: The Sierra Club Foundation
EVENT DATE: Nov 30, 2015
THE STORY: The Sierra Student Coalition International Committee aims to build power and influence leaders in the US and internationally to take action on climate disruption. By working with partner organizations, organizing youth around the globe, and pressuring leaders at the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP) we seek to create a just, equitable, sustainable future for all.
In December 2015, the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is set to adopt a new policy that will replace the Kyoto Protocol in 2020. The negotiations leading up to and at COP21 in Paris, France are an incredible opportunity for countries around the world to come together and push for strong climate action.
Leading up to these negotiations Sierra Student Coalition youth will work to bring clean energy to their communities, train other youth to be leaders in the climate movement, and show the world that the citizens of the United States cares about climate and so should our government. Additionally, the Sierra Student Coalition will be at this COP21 actively participating in the process to ensure the perspective and voice of US youth is reflected in the final agreement.
WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP: All of the work we do is done on a volunteer basis; we choose to spend our time and energy working for strong climate commitments from our leaders because we know how important climate action is for everyone. This year we will be delivering trainings throughout the country to show youth how they can be part of the movement, we will be working with Chinese youth on a low-carbon campus action program as well as attending a conference in Shanghai to give a workshop on COP 21, we will be supporting the Gulf Coast Rising movement in remembrance of Hurricane Katrina, launching a communications campaign, and participating in the Bonn Intersessional Negotiations as well as the COP in Paris, France. We encourage participation in these activities that youth help plan, however not everyone is able to attend due to financial limitations. We need your help in order to ensure that everyone who is committed to working on the committee has the opportunity to participate in the events that help plan. We will use the funds we raise to pay for flights, accommodations, food, and other necessary travel expenses.
