EVENT DATE: Aug 25, 2012
Last August, our community came together in grief as we lost Shawntel Dixon Jones. Shawntel, the wife of Walter Jones and mother to Dixon (13), Nathan (12) and Mims (8) passed away unexpectedly.
The community is now coming together to celebrate and remember Shawntel’s life, while serving to help the community and its children. On August 25th, the inaugural Shawntel Dixon Jones Run will be held in Vestavia. The run is the idea of Janet Ball, one of Shawntel’s good friends. Janet felt moved to find a way to remember and celebrate the life of her dear friend. The race will include both a 5K run and a one mile fun run so that people of all ages can participate.
Finding a cause to benefit the run was fortuitous this year. Vestavia Hills Elementary Central was just beginning to start a campaign to raise the funds necessary to build a track on the site. “It was a perfect fit” said Janet Ball. “Shawntel loved working on projects to benefit the schools. It just made sense to participate in this community project.” Because the track will also benefit those in the community who wish to walk on it, this is truly a community project. When complete, the track will bear Shawntel’s name.
The estimated cost to build the track is $50,000. In addition to the run, the race committee is working with Central to help raise other donations for this project, including reaching out to local businesses who would like to participate in this worthy cause.
