BENEFITING: Stephen Siller Tunnel To Towers Foundation
EVENT: New York City 2016
EVENT DATE: Sep 25, 2016
This September will be the 15th Anniversary of 9/11 & my 5th consecutive year participating in this amazing event. A day when thousands of people died & families lost, I had my own personal reasons for wanting to run in this event. After doing it my first time, I was overwhelmed with an American Spirit I witnessed that I have never seen before. I was humbled by the experience & I made the decision that day I would make this an annual tradition and try to do my part.
MY PERSONAL REASONS...On the days following 9/11, a dear friend, Police Officer James Colon, "JIM", took my husband and 2 other friends, Mike Rugani & Bill Horsman directly on to the "pile." There they unselfishly volunteered with the rescue efforts for 2 days. Sadly, Jim was diagnosed with Fanconi Anemia & passed away in 2008 of Acute Myelogenous Leukemia at the age of 38. He was an amazing friend, brother, son, husband & father. He is truly missed by many. More importantly, love doesn't end when life ends & I will always run this event in memory of Jim, for all he was & for those who love him.
In my heart, I run this in honor of my Aunt Julie. Julie is a survivor of Washington Group International. On 9/11 the South Tower was struck between the 78th-83rd floors. Washington Group resided on the 91st floor & 13 of its employees died that day. Her family & friends are beyond grateful that she left when she did & that she is still with us today.
I would also like to acknowledge the bravery of my father that day. A man who should have been on his way home from work that morning. He was a member of the MTA at Chelsea Piers at that time & remained behind to utilize the buses in any way needed. With his family not knowing of his where abouts or his well being that entire day, he returned home late that night, covered in soot, tired & distraught. His accounts of the day, what he saw & what he had to do was something he will never forget.
"The anniversary of 9/11 had become personal. Acceptable to remember in ways that are appropriate to the level of grief we still feel or the commitment of family & friends to their wars still being fought."
WE SHALL NEVER FORGET!
About the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation
The Siller Family started the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation to honor the memory of their brother, Stephen, a New York City firefighter (FDNY) who lost his life on September 11, 2001 after strapping on his gear and running through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers.
The goal of the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation is to continue Stephen’s legacy by supporting our nation’s first responders and service members. Building for America’s Bravest, a proud program of the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, constructs specially adapted smart homes for our most catastrophically injured service members. In January 2015, the Foundation also raised over one million dollars to fully pay off the mortgages for the families of slain NYPD Officers Wenjian Liu and Luis Ramos.
The mission of the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation is to honor the sacrifice of firefighter Stephen Siller, who laid down his life to save others on September 11, 2001. We also honor our military and first responders who continue to make the supreme sacrifice of life and limb for our country.
