A few years ago, Stachetober was just a goofy solidarity pledge to the fire service. Kind of like, "I love the fire service so much, I'm willing to look like an idiot to prove it" - which may seem harsh, but if you've ever grown a mustache then you know the first few weeks are rough.
The solidarity thing was fun, but last year Whatcom County Fire District #8 tried to use it as an outlet to raise money and awareness for charity, successfully raising nearl $5,000 for the Northwest Burn Foundation.
This year, Bellingham Fire Department members are "giving it a grow" in the hopes of raising money for the Burned Children Recovery Foundation, a local non-profit organization that provides emotional and financial assistance to the families struggling during their child's recovery from thier burn injuries. http://www.burnedchildrenrecovery.org/
"Growing is half the battle... but since I have had a mustache for over 30 yrs I made the commitment to shave mine off if I reach a goal of $1000 by the end of October. I have many co-workers, friends, and family that have never seen me with a clean upper lip. Help everyone see the real me by donating to this great cause.
