The History
A few years ago, Stachetober was just a goofy solidarity pledge to the fire service. Kind of like, "I love the fire service so much, I'm willing to look like an idiot to prove it" - which may seem harsh, but if you've ever grown a mustache then you know the first few weeks are rough.

The solidarity thing was fun, but last year Whatcom County Fire District #8 tried to use it as an outlet to raise money and awareness for charity, successfully raising nearl $5,000 for the Northwest Burn Foundation.

This year, Bellingham Fire Department members are "giving it a grow" in the hopes of raising money for the Burned Children Recovery Foundation, a local non-profit organization that provides emotional and financial assistance to the families struggling during their child's recovery from thier burn injuries.

"Growing is half the battle..." There is a period between "not having a mustache" and "having a mustache" that is just awful. This growing stage is why we need your support. Throughout the first 2-3 weeks we will look pretty darn pathetic. Our friends will laugh at us, our wives or significant others won't want to be seen with us. Children will run away screaming. Please help us by showing your support! By sponsoring a Stachetober participant, you'll be making this growth period somewhat bearable!

You don't have to grow a mustache to participate in Stachetober! It'd be a lot cooler if you did, but it's mostly about raising money for a good cause. Feel free to just hassle your friends/family/co-workers to donate to the cause, and all will be good. If you want to grow out your eyelashes or arm hair, you won't get any complaints here...

For the Hardest of the Hardcore, here are the growing rules:
1. You must be 'stache-less on September 30th.
2. Grow that upper-lip until October 31st (if you start to love it - feel free to keep it going)
3. No beards. Everyone looks cooler with a beard - it's too easy. Besides, in the fire service they're not allowed. The skin around the jaw-line (where an SCBA mask needs to seal) should stay clean shaven.
