THE STORY:

Stacy Burleson wrote -

Last month, while in Las Vegas I suffered my fourth D.V.T. (Deep Vein Thrombosis/blood clot).  Having a history of blood clots, I knew the signs and went to the E.R. immediately when I noticed my leg was oddly swollen in the center of my calf.  I didn’t have the same leg pain or blueish color that I did with the other clots in the past, but I knew there was no reason for my leg to swell in such a bizarre way (like a donut was wrapped around it).  I spent the night in the hospital and it was terrifying to wait for all my test results being so far away from my family.  The next morning, my husband took the day off work and surprised me by driving four hours to the hospital without knowing when or if I would be released.  During all my health problems (whether I was in a wheelchair for months, re-learning to walk, or even bed ridden) my husband has been my rock, my everything, and helped me to laugh even when the outcome was grim and there wasn’t much to laugh at.

Thankfully, the hospital cleared me to go home.  I was diagnosed with a blood clot in my calf and I was instructed to continue with my blood thinner medication.  After being home for less than a week, I was walking upstairs and became extremely short of breath.  Again, I headed back to the ER.  According to the doctors, a cluster of very small blood clots had moved to my lung (pulmonary embolism).  I spent a week in the hospital and have been recovering at home ever since.

Despite everything that I’ve been through the past few years, I feel truly lucky to be alive and to have such amazing people in my life.  I am grateful for the love and support of my wonderful husband, my mother, & all my family and friends.  Without you all, I could not have made it through!!

My hope is that by sharing my story, I can help spread the word about the dangers of blood clots.  On March 8th 2015, I'll join the National Blood Clot Alliance (NBCA) Stop the Clot Walk in Griffith Park.  Although I’m still short of breath and not able to walk well, I’m determined to participate in this event… even if I have to be rolled over the finish line in a wheelchair!

Three ways to help my cause;

*  Join the walk

*  Donate

* Share - share my page on Facebook & help spread the word about blood clots

ABOUT NBCA & BLOOD CLOTS:

Blood clots (often called DVT - Deep Vein Thrombosis and PE - Pulmonary Embolism) and clot-provoked strokes are very serious medical conditions. The Surgeon General estimates that blood clots affect as many as 600,000 Americans, resulting in 100,000 deaths each year. More fatalities are caused by blood clots each year than breast cancer, AIDS, and auto accidents combined!  In fact, blood clots are also the number one cause of preventable hospital deaths.

There is cause for serious concern, but there is also good news. Many blood clots can be prevented by understanding the risk factors, signs and symptoms. Your generosity and participation helps the NBCA get the message out  that together, we are impacting patients and saving lives.
