BENEFITING: BIG SUR LEARNING PROJECT
EVENT DATE: Jul 11, 2011
StageKids! has been an annual summer theater program that developed from the need of the Big Sur community to have something for the local youth to engage in during the long summer school break. The nature of the topography and long distances between homes means many kids are isolated from their peers in Big Sur and there is rarely an opportunity for the youth to meet outside of school. This program has been a way to unite the youth of Big Sur as well as initiate creative teamwork.
The program is based on self-contained weeks of production. The program starts on Monday with a group of kids, ages 6-17, and through the week we build original scenes, songs, choreography, sets and costumes. It culminates with a live performance early Friday evening. There are no scripts other than a basic story skeleton, but the method developed encourages quite a bit of dialogue through improvisation and the results are always astounding. The fact that it has existed these many years has also allowed students to explore leadership roles. This past summer one of the teachers had been a participant since she was seven years old.
This program is designed to service ALL children of the Big Sur region. Most year round residents can't afford to pay an additional tuition for this program. The program has survived on grants from such entities as Turner Foundation, Monterey Arts Council, etc. Due to the current state of the economy funding from these foundations has dwindled in the last few years.
The program is in jeopardy of ending without outside assistance. It is the focal point summer program for most residents of Big Sur.
The funds we need pay for the expenses of the program.
