I'm running the TCS New York City Marathon to help the inspiring students at St. Aloysius Gonzaga High School in Kenya, which bills itself as “the world’s first high school for AIDS orphans.” After visiting St. Al's in 2013, I could tell you about the grinding poverty of Nairobi’s Kibera slum, or the trauma in the young people’s lives, or the precariousness of their living situation. What struck me most, though, was the students’ grace and grit. These kids worked harder than any I’ve ever known. They have more guts, heart and passion than I could ever hope to have. Even if you think I’m an idiot for trying to run my first marathon at 50 (and I don’t necessarily disagree with you), please make a donation so the teens at St. Al’s know that there are nice folks 7,300 miles away who care about them. This is honestly the best investment you’ll ever make. Please, please help. If you won't do it for AIDS orphans, do it for the amusement of watching a 50-year-old non-athlete try to avoid getting trampled in all five boroughs.
