~~I am interested in starting a program to provide easy to use computers, at no cost, to elderly persons who are on a fixed income to help keep them connected to family and friends. The computers should be adequate to run basic word processing software, Skype via web cam, and entertainment (the ability to play simple games, play CD’s and DVD’s and possibly Blue Ray disks. These computers should preferably laptops or tablet style with enough memory and speed so that the user will not become bewildered.
I am a disabled veteran who has worked with personal computers for well over twenty years. This need came to my attention when some local elderly people were referred to me for computer maintenance and repair as well as getting to know elderly veterans when I have to go to the VA Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. I found that they had badly outdated equipment and didn’t have the resources to upgrade to a newer computer or even to upgrade their existing system. This bothered me because I am on a fixed income and I only have adequate equipment due to a few friends.
The program I am proposing would be a donation based only program. All donations would go directly for the acquisition of required equipment. Many of the recipients will be United States Military Veterans as well as non-veterans with low incomes. I will also provide some training as well.
I have two reasons for starting this not-for-profit program. One of these is to provide contact for elderly persons and to provide them an outlet for possible boredom. The other is a selfish one. I need something to keep my hands and mind busy and keep me up to date on emerging computer technology. I figured that if I could benefit others in that process, it would be a good thing.
What I really need now is the hardware and software to get this project moving. I have a few older systems that I am currently upgrading that were donated to me for this purpose. I am only able to do what I can. I am delivering the first of these computers this week to a wonderful man in Huntsville, Alabama to replace an obsolete computer that he currently uses. He is over 80 years old and will be surprised to have a web cam so that he can talk, face to face, with his remaining siblings, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and other friends.
