Stan Moore- The REAL Tough Mudder
Team Member: Erin and Jeff Dehmlow
EVENT DATE Nov 14, 2015
In late July was my daughter, Acadia's, 2nd birthday. We had a party for her and, honestly, I thought it might be her last birthday with her beloved Poppi Stan. You see, Stan's chondrosarcoma (the bone cancer that caused him to lose his hip in 1997) had returned, more aggressive and pissed than last time. If this cancer had spread, it might have meant.... well, that Acadia possibly woudn't have her Poppi at her 3rd birthday.
Poppi Stan is particularly precious to me and Acadia because, when I was in the hospital for three weeks when Acadia was only days old, Stan stepped up to be her primary caregiver, while my mom and Jeff, my husband, were with me in the hospital around the clock. No baby experience, only recently married to my mom, and so very smitten with Acadia (how could you not be???), Stan was thrown in head first and happy to help.
Happy to help--- he is ALWAYS happy to help. No hip, walking with a limp and a cane and helping move box after box as Jeff and I moved into our home, physcially laying tile in my family room, walking around the zoo with Acadia untill his hand was so sore he had a hard time grasping his cane. Never with one complaint.
This wonderful man that never complains, never says "can't," had his leg amputated all the way up to his pelvis. The good news is, for now, he is cancer free! However, there are things he honestly can't do now. He can't walk without help, he can't sit for long periods of time and he can't afford the medical bills that are rolling in. Amputation and weeks in the hospital, physical and occupational rehabilitation, wheelchair, walker, home modificaitons, ongoing monitoring to make sure the chondrosarcoma doesn't return....all have depleted Stan's savings. Savings built on hard work as a teacher, in Arizona, which means an already very modest salary to begin with.
If you can find it in your heart and your wallet to donate even 10 dollars, please do. My mom, Stan, Jeff, Acadia and I would be eternally grateful. We look forward to Acadia's next birthday, Poppi Stan right beside her again as she blows out the candles!
