BENEFITING: HABITAT FOR HUMANITY INTERNATIONAL
Imagine hearing children's voice coming from the stars! That's what the StarryTelling project is all about.
Last year we (Giraffe 'n' Ant Productions) worked with middle school students from four metro DC area schools to write and narrate their own sky stories, inspired by their experience of the night sky and their understanding of contemporary astronomy. The audio program which includes raps, prose, poetry, love stories, sci fi and heroic skylore debuted at the Einstein Planetarium at the National Air and Space Museum. You can hear some of the stories on our website: www.starrytelling.com or even more of them on www.365daysof astronomy.org (search starrytelling)
It has now been accepted by the Night Visions IV art festival held at the Coconino Arts Center in Flagstaff AZ, the first Dark Sky City, dedicated to minimizing light pollution....yeah, you can actually see stars out there! Night Visions coincides with Flagstaff Science Festival: Science Illuminates.
There is an opportunity for a Giraffe 'n' Ant instructor (me) to travel to Flagstaff and do school workshops to engage students and teachers in the StarryTelling projects. Using Skype, local metro DC schools hope to be able to Skype and compare experiences of our night skies and the experience of creating a StarryTale with the Flagstaff students.
Can you help?
The amount of money we would like to raise covers: airfare from DC to AZ, hotel for 5 nights, workshop expenses and materials including sound design of the student's stories.
