The mission of STARS is to improve the lives of individuals with developmental and cognitive disabilities. Our vision is to be the leader in creating quality opportunities for life-long empowerment and success. Formerly known as the Scottsdale Foundation for the Handicapped, STARS was founded in 1973 by a small group of parents concerned with the lack of resources for their developmentally disabled children. Affectionately referred to as “Las Madrinas” (the Godmothers), what started in a small, donated trailer with only a few participants and volunteers has become a thriving community institution. Today, STARS serves more than 200 individuals daily though our site and community-based programs; all of which enable STARS to create a lifetime support system for our participants, their guardians and families.
