BENEFITING: ARVADA JUNIOR CHAMBER FOUNDATION INC
Star Spangled Scholars is an ongoing program of the Arvada Junior Chamber Foundation, a 501 (c) 3 non-profit, Federal Tax ID #87-0773288.
Members of local chapters of the Sons of the American Revolution and Sons of the War of 1812 and local artisan/historians “Irish Lace” and “Smoketalker” from Hands on History Colorado are offering experiential, hands-on-history lessons to students of all ages focusing on the life experiences from Colonial times to the Pioneer experience in Colorado. These lessons connect daily life experiences of early Americans with the struggles of survival in early Colonial America and the unsettled West focusing on:
the arduous circumstances endured by early Americans in the Revolutionary War and War of 1812;
the integrity of purpose as stated in the Constitution;
the inspiration that resulted in the writing of the Star Spangled Banner after the War of 1812 (considered America’s second Revolutionary War).
Students touch, hold, use and even wear historically correct artifacts contained in the Sons’ “Patriot’s Chest”. The Sons come to each presentation in period correct attire, explaining the purpose of each article of clothing in their “Patriot Chest”. Likewise, “Irish Lace” and “Smoketalker” attend in period correct attire they’ve made by hand. They will also demonstrate and encourage the students to use their artifacts from the Pioneer West, dating from the late 1700’s through the early 1800’s era. “Irish Lace” lives this lifestyle today - spinning, tatting, lace making, quilting and toy making. “Smoketalker” will present lessons on the Pioneer efforts to survive – trapping, hunting, fishing and making use of the whole animal. Star Spangled Scholars lessons are not sanitized and as experiential as possible. This is true hands-on-history learning where students develop a "heart" knowledge of what it took to establish this great country.
We offer this free of charge to schools, after school tutoring groups and other entities serving kids and their families.
