Umoja Market (Community owned and operated market)
Organized by: Ian Bruce
We are currently in planning but we are having periodic meetings and will be delegating tasks very soon
July 15, 2016
We are members of the long beach community looking to protect and strengthen each other by laying the foundation for a strong economic base. If we do not own anything, and cannot provide resources nor jobs to our community members, we will always be at the mercy of others. Do not continue to cry out for change when you have the ability to affect it yourself. We must work as a team and have a plan.
What will it be?
Umoja market will be owned and operated by the community. We aim to employ our local farmers, bakers, student workers, and those of us who may have trouble getting employment due to their past.
short term: raise $300,000 to maintain this business for a minimum of 12 months. These costs will include rent, building maintenance, equipment, inventory and paying employees
long term: create many jobs, branch into multiple businesses within the store, keep capital circulating within the community, create an economic presence, which influences many other aspects of community life (including politics), and replicate this model throughout different communities accross the country.
