Sports can easily become an expensive enterprise, especially for low income people. When a local halfway house for people in recovery began soliciting donations of used running shoes and athletic tech clothing to encourage its members to take up running the seed of Starting Block was planted. We began to see a growing number of low income people desiring to improve their lives by living healthier. But why should they risk their feet by wearing shoes broken in by another set of feet? What kept that smoking fast kid in 5th grade from joining the track team in High School where he coud have got a scholarship to college? Money was the reason. What if there was a funding source to assist in buying quality running shoes, reduce the cost of running programs, and help pay for race entry fees that will give new runners some much needed self confidence? All they need is a Starting Block, and YOU!
