THE STORY:

Thank you to everyone who has reached out to us in the last few days asking about how to send gifts, flowers, and food in our mother's memory. These last few days have been very difficult, but your messages have been comforting reminders of how many people loved and admired our mother. In lieu of flowers and other donations, we'd like to ask that people who are interested in sending a gift consider contributing to a fund we are setting up in our mother's name. Our mother was taken too soon from us and from all the people she loved. But we truly believe that this fund will help to keep her memory and spirit alive for years to come. Having spoken with her medical team and employer, we've decided to commit the memorial fund in the following three ways: First, we are creating a scholarship fund at our mother's place of employment, Port Richmond High School. Anyone who knew our mother knows her sincere commitment to education: with both of us preparing to embark on our careers (Marilyn as a doctor, Georgia as a lawyer), she turned her attention and devotion to classes of high school students at Port Richmond, where she worked as an aide for the assistant principal. She was beloved by colleagues and other staff, but was adored by her students. Just as she did with her own daughters, "Ms. Bessy" believed that there was no limit to what each student who walked into her office could accomplish. To remember Bessy's commitment to her students, we are setting up a scholarship endowment in her name to be awarded to a first or second generation student at Port Richmond High School who represents the same passion for education that our mother strived to foster in every young person she met. Second, we want to commemorate the bravery and spirit Bessy demonstrated throughout her fight against cancer and to recognize the doctors and other medical staff who sat in the trenches with her during her grueling treatment. The staff at ProCure Proton Therapy Center in New Jersey went above and beyond in every way. Our mom always had a big smile coming to and leaving from treatment, and it takes a special team of doctors and nurses -- led by Dr. Brian Chon, her radiation oncologist, and Dr. Bob Maki, her oncologist at Mt. Sinai -- to inspire their patients in that way. It will surprise no one to know that Bessy spent her time at ProCure cracking jokes and encouraging the pediatric patients there, trying to give them strength for a battle she herself needed all her strength for. We want to offer a separate donation in her memory to sponsor activities and programs for kids undergoing the same treatment our mother underwent at ProCure, in hopes that a donation in her memory will lessen their burden. Lastly, we hope to defray some of the funeral expenses with the remaining funds. We are both extremely grateful for any help you can provide as we prepare to ultimately repatriate our mother's remains to her beloved village in Greece, so that she can ultimately be laid to rest beside her family. -Marilyn & Georgia

During Georgia's time in HMTA, Bessy was incredibly close to members of the team and to HMTA's efforts as a whole. She never missed a tournament if she had anything to say about it--once even driving to see us in Philadelphia after, though she didn't realize the culprit then, her disease had essentially paralyzed one of her legs. She was there for some of the program's happiest moments and she even hosted the team on Staten Island when HMTA was going full throttle at CUBAIT on a few different occasions. She will be incredibly missed and her contributions to HMTA will never be forgotten. 2 years ago

Georgia and Marilyn, we feel fortunate to have known your mother (though very briefly). She had given us courage and laughter when we really needed them. She will be remembered. 2 years ago
