THE STORY:

RAISING MONEY FOR THE STATEN ISLAND EARLY LEARNING CENTER

Since 1984 the Staten Island Early Learning Center - the "little school with the red door" as it is fondly known by some - has been preparing 3-5 year olds, most with developmental delays, for success in kindergarten.

Children thrive in our school where, in a warm and nurturing environment, they receive all the therapies and build the educational foundation they need to be prepared to reach their full potential. A highly skilled team of dedicated teachers, aides, speech, physical and occupational therapists, nurse and school psychologist, work in concert with the children’s families to develop individualized education plans that give these children the greatest opportunity to successfully transition to kindergarten.

The school is located in the Tottenville section with a view of the Raritan Bay. Its outdoor playground is surrounded by a grassy lot where family picnics are held, the occasional farm animal visits, and the 20 or so children who graduate each year walk down the path in cap and gown to waiting friends and family under the large striped tent.

State-approved evaluations are provided free of charge to every child and include psychological, educational, speech and language, occupational or physical therapy assessments.

But every adult at the school,is special and is aware of the impact each has on the children. This amazing team, along with the children's families develop individualized education plans for each child, adjusting them as the children's needs change.

State-approved evaluations are provided free of charge to every child and include psychological, educational, speech and language, occupational or physical therapy assessments.

While the New York City Department of Education and New York State Education Department fund the basic program, we need to raise money each year for the extra things that make the school unique and provide the children additional opportunities for growth, like the therapeutic horseback riding and dance and music therapy programs. Without donations from generous individuals and local businesses, grants from corporate foundations and local government, and the tireless efforts of our Parent Council, we could not provide our children these special options that they adore.

The school has a number of immediate needs we must address and we are turning to the community for help. The school's biggest needs are an upgraded  heating and air conditioning system so the children and staff are warm in winter and cool in summer, and replacement of our fire alarm system and fire doors. We also have to replace important items like cabinets, flooring and our storage shed out back. These are not terribly exciting projects but they are all necessary.

Our fundraising goal is $318,000. We are happy to share our budget with those interested in making significant investments in the welfare of Staten Island's children, and in becoming major sponsors of our small, but incredibly important school!

To arrange a tour of the school please contact Bonnie Wohl, Education Director, at (718) 984-7900 or bwohl@voa-gny.org.

For major sponsorship opportunities please contact Rachel Weinstein, VP/Cheif Development Officer at (212) 496-4305 or rweinstein@voa-gny.org.
