Over the past year, we have been learning about women resisting the Taliban - the topic of our Vermont History Day exhibit. We are taking our entry to Washington DC, and as we prepare for National History Day, we decided that it was important to go beyond our research to make a real difference. We identified SOLA -- the first and only boarding school for girls in Afghanistan. As a boarding school, SOLA is able to bring girls together from parts of the country without schools. SOLA fights for girls' education and aims for its students to achieve professional careers typically dominated by males. Founded by a woman named Shabana Basij-Rasikh, born in Afghanistan and a Middlebury College graduate, SOLA paves the way for girls to become future leaders. Recently, we were able to speak with Shabana via Skype and were inspired by her passion and dedication to her work. With our read-a-thon, we will be raising funds for SOLA and reading out loud for the girls in Afghanistan who aren't permitted to read out loud.
