UPDATE!!! Thanks to some recent donors, I have reached 50% of my goal and decreased the amount of funds needed here!!!
In June of this year, I hosted a Summer Camp at Ecole Baudin Méthodiste for over 120 children as well provided Teacher Staff Development. Community Outreach was also part of the experience. I visited the Papillon Orphanage, StreetHearts, a school for street children, a home of a local resident, New American Institute for English, and with boys that aged out of the orphanage they were living in and soon had to transition into the “real world” with very little if any support. I am so moved by these special youth that I feel compelled to go back, to do more! I have decided to take educational leave, which is unpaid in my state for several months so that I can focus on how to best use my talents as a teacher, a mother, and an advocate for orphans in the Northwest part of Haiti. I plan to travel to Cap-Haitian, for one month in January of 2016 and one month in June of 2016. While in Cap-Haitien, I plan to volunteer at Streethearts, (http://streetheartshaiti.org (501c3). A safe haven for the street kids of Cap-Haitian, focusing on self-worth and empowerment through athletics, hygiene, nutrition, education, social work and community outreach. As an educator with 21 years of experience, my goal is to share my educational expertise with local teachers, as well as provide student support in ESL and French instruction. While at Streethearts my goals are to: -Work as a tutor of French and ESL for the Streethearts campus children -Provide assistance with basic budgeting and life skills for Streethearts youth who will soon transition into independent living situations -Partner with local administrators to provide staff development support for teachers of French and English
