Last year, my old friend Terrance inspired me to do something different. For the past five years, his My Birthday Fundraiser initiative has funded scholarships for low-income first-generation college students. That inspired me to declare my birthday STAY+ ("stay positive") Day and dedicate it to spreading positive vibes in any way I can. What better way to celebrate the gift of seeing another year?
The inaugural STAY+ Day raised over $1500 for Be the Match, a cause close to my heart since donating bone marrow in 2007. After seeing Bully last summer and helping loved ones through bullying experiences, I have chosen to donate this year's proceeds to Stand for the Silent. Kirk and Laura Smalley founded SFTS after their 11 year-old son Ty took his own life as a result of bullying. Through their belief that each human being has a valuable contribution to make in the world and deserves to feel loved, included, and treated with respect, they travel to schools across the country, encouraging students to always remember that "I AM SOMEBODY."
Whatever you choose to give, even if just your time, you will be making a difference in children's lives. If you prefer to donate by cash or check, feel free to email me at firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
Thanks for checking out the fundraiser, and thanks in advance for your support!
