BENEFITING: St. Michaels Episcopal Church
Bless, O Lord, us Thy servants,
who minister in Thy temple.
Grant that what we sing with our lips,
we may believe in our hearts,
and what we believe in our hearts,
we may show forth in our lives.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord.
–A Chorister’s Prayer, dates to 4th Century
Be a part of the creation of a new minstry that will support and promote the art, beauty, and joy found in music: St. Cecilia's Guild.
In August 2014, St. Michael's Choir members will partner with choristers of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Geneva, Illinois, to serve a residency at Chichester Cathedral in Sussex, England. During summer holiday time, visiting choirs from around the globe spell cathedral choirs in the United Kingdom from their regular duties in support of daily worship.
The residency musicians will support daily Evensong liturgies, as well as Sunday services of Matins, Eucharist and Evensong. For a volunteer choir, the residency poses a substantial commitment in preparation time to learn a large repertory of pieces, and time away from normal work and family obligations. It is an honor to be among the few choirs selected through a highly competitive process to serve a residency. A cathedral residency is not only an immersion in music, but also an awesome experience communing with spiritual ancestors who have worshiped and offered music in these holy spaces for hundreds of years.
There are added benefits to participation in cathedral residencies. The experience is a rich blend of worship, music, education, fellowship and deep grounding in the faith. Choristers and those accompanying them typically return with intensified energy for the worship and music in their home parish. The residencies also become a focal point for recruiting new members, young and not-so-young. They also set a high musical standard that must be practiced week after week at home, if there is to be a chance to qualify.
The formation of St. Cecilia's Guild will establish an ongoing scholarship fund in support of strategic music ministry missions of St. Michael’s Church, including but not limited to continuing cathedral residencies on a 2 to 4 year cyclical basis.
Help grow the music program. Sing, dance, love and be moved by all that gives thanks to God.
