EVENT: Pittsburgh Marathon 2017
EVENT DATE: May 07, 2017
In 2006 Cindy and I decided to adopt a dog and, after a short debate (she won), we determined that it would be a greyhound. Actually, two greyhounds. We quickly learned that these guys are sweet couch potatoes who, once they’ve accepted their humans, do not want to be without them. They can be very calming, cuddling on the couch with you, or entertaining when they throw their toys in the air and catch or chase them. They are amazingly beautiful when they open up and sprint, and when they hit the couch for a well-deserved nap. And most importantly, they have a way of sneaking into your heart, curling up, and just making themselves at home there forever. It’s a lasting imprint that stays long after they’ve lived their too short time on this earth.
I last ran this half marathon three years ago, and after more than two years of recovering from a running injury I’m climbing back. I ran for the hounds then, and I’m doing it again today. I run for them to raise the funds needed to cover greyhound medical expenses, vaccinations, wellness exams, and other adoption program operating costs; since Steel City Greyhounds is an all-volunteer organization, 100% of the money that I raise will go directly to the adoption program. Knowing that I can help members of this special breed motivates me. I do this to help as many hounds as possible find their way from the track into their forever homes, both physical and in our hearts.
Steel City Greyhounds (SCG) is a nonprofit corporation that promotes the adoption of retired racing greyhounds in the metropolitan Pittsburgh and surrounding western Pennsylvania regions.
