Hello family and friends!
I am about to embark on one of the biggest journeys of my life by becoming a certified yoga instructor. My month long intensive training will begin on June 8th and last until July 2nd at Circle Yoga Shala. Yoga first clicked for me when I got headstand. I couldn't even Balance in tripod, so I practiced nothing but headstand for a whole week until I finally got it. It wasn't about conquering the pose itself, but the determination that I found within myself that week.
I hadn't really faced anything that I had to try that hard for, and when I achieved it I felt that fire go off inside. Doing yoga just made sense. Not for the accomplishment of poses, but for achieving self-goals and pushing my limits past things I never thought I could do. Getting certified is another thing I never thought I would get to do. It was always in the back of my head but I always imagined it as a long term goal, but when the opportunity presented itself I knew I had to take it! For those of you who don't know my story, here's a brief summary of how I fell in love with yoga:
I first tried yoga in the spring of 2013 as a fun class, little did I know that it would have such a huge impact on my life. I was immediately drawn to it, but it took me a year and a half to finally decide to fully commit myself to my practice. Since then, I have learned the amazing powers of yoga. It is a practice of both your body and your mind. Yoga has helped me grow as a person by allowing me to find peace, humility, and self-awareness.
I have always struggled with self-image. I often found myself wishing I had a "perfect body" which would then fester even more negative thoughts about myself. Once I started to grow in my practice, I began to lose those doubts. The thoughts I once struggled with daily began to disappear. Even though I don't have that "perfect body" that I used to dream of, I can now say that I love my body, flaws and all. It can do amazing things and it has gotten me so far in life! Yoga has helped instill a positive self-image within myself, as well as a healthier lifestyle.
Not only has yoga allowed me to appreciate myself more, it has also changed my perspective on life into a more positive one. I now try to look at life and people with open and loving eyes. Staying positive, finding patience, and being grateful are some of the things I remind myself daily. I have been able to take past situations and grow from them as a person. I am where I am today because of the obstacles in my past, and I can now look back and know that it was all a part of getting to where I am now.
Yoga is much more than a hobby, it is a way of life. I don't do it for the exercise, I do it as a constant reminder of the things I have overcome. It reminds me of the goals that I have set for myself, the outlook I want to have on life and towards others, and the way I want to continue living my life. I now want to take my love and passion for yoga, and share it with others!
