BENEFITING: BARRIO LA PLANTA PROJECT
Hi friends and family!
As many of you know, I have been in Nicaragua since last November. While there, I had the opportunity to work with an organization that is bringing education to low-income children and adults in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua. The Barrio Planta Project is a community-based education initiative that teaches English, creative arts, computer skills, and other electives like dance, photography, yoga, and much more.
The aim of the project is to help locals find work in the rapidly growing tourism industry in Nicaragua. As this beautiful country becomes more popular for tourists from all over the world, more job opportunities are created. Unfortunately, many of these jobs are limited to proficient English speakers, and only a small percentage of the population is bilingual. BPP works to even the playing field for everyone by providing free, year-round supplementary education that not only makes our students more employable, but enhances their confidence and quality of life as well.
Since I started with BPP, I have been able to help the Executive Director fundraise and write grants that will allow us to continue the mission not only in San Juan del Sur, but other communities in Nicaragua as well. I am happy to say that starting early 2014, I will even have a paid position doing work with the school that is fulfilling and meaningful. I am really excited to see where it all goes next!
Unfortunately, my own personal situation has changed drastically over the past six months, and I find myself in a position where I have to prioritize work over continuing to volunteer until our budget allows for a salary. It is my hope that through this fundraiser I can continue to work with the Barrio Planta Project for the next few months while I wait to transition into a paid position.
In essence, your donations go towards creating even more funding, because that what development is. We are currently working on three grant proposals that are all very promising, as well as securing a corporate sponsorship for the school that will bring steady monthly funding. These things take time however, and I hope that you can help me fill the gap so that I can continue to be part of this amazing organization.
Thank you so much for all of your continued support and belief in me!
