In early December I started training for my 23rd Boston Marathon fundraiser (04/16/2018). This year will be the third year of training that I share the company of my dear friend Charlie Sumner. We will be running for the South Shore Health System Foundation (SSHSF).
The funds raised directly impact eighty patients participating in sixteen clinical trials the results of which are merged with the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. This affiliation with the Institute and Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center is the deciding factor in my decision to join the SSHSF Team.
I think that after all these years training would be earlier But each is as varied as the New England weather but Charlie and I are as determined as if this were our first.
Charlie lives in Brewster and our team trains Saturdays on the hills of Newton, so Charlie will drive up in the morning so we can train together with our Team. I drive down on Thursday mornings to meet him at the Cape Cod Canal to run one of our longer mid-week runs. The Canal has a beautiful running path but at times the conditions can be unruly at best. This training is only possible with the support our families and we love them for it.
This year we will again be running in honor of three dear people and I offer some detail here.

Running the 2018 Boston Marathon with them in mind:
Dr. James Barnes:
He had been my Chiropractor for almost 10 years. He was the one who kept me in Chiropractic balance for as many marathons. It was a sad day when I read his email advising me that he was having to retire to face the consequences of a diagnosis of multiple myeloma. But with the love of his wife, three kids, immediate family, friends and the wonderful help and the science at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute / Clinical Trials he is doing remarkably well. He is planning to walk the Canal on Thursdays while we run and enjoy his company after we finish. (Free Sundaes at the Canal Friendly’s)
Mr. Dana Condit:
He and his wife Gayle are from Brewster Mass. He is one of our Veterans of the war in Vietnam and has been working with Dana Farber and Clinical Trials as it relates to the lingering effects of exposure to Agent Orange a defoliant used widely during that war. He and Gayle cannot say enough of their Clinical Trials Team. Their work has added years to the lives of so many.
Ryan is Charlie Sumner’s nephew. Ryan was 10 years old when he was diagnosed with a Leukemia. I remember the day Charlie and I took Ryan in for one of his radiation treatments. Mixed emotionally, watching Ryan receive his treatment, why should a child have to face such a procedure and at the same time we’re so thankful that we have a place like Dana Farber and affiliated hospitals like SSHS that can offer this level of care. Ryan is now 15 years old and is considered a survivor and though still visiting Dana Farber, he is now in their long term care program.
All of this because of the Teams of wonderful Research Scientists, Clinical Trials Team, Doctors, Nurses, Technicians and the Supporting Staff including donors large and small, donors like you and me.
My commitment, I’ll do all 26.2 miles….…
Remember this isn’t a one way street, but parallel paths; I am happy to support your efforts as you support mine.
Have the best possible day,
