If you know me you know that I love to dance and if I could I would dance my way around Lake of the Isles with every friend and loved one I have ever danced with to celebrate the Walk for Recovery on Saturday, September 15th, 9 am to 1 pm.
This year I am moved to honor the memory of my two brothers Jamie and Michael two of six kids in our family, who struggled with alcohol and/or drugs for much of their lives. It was a hard journey for each of them and for all their loved ones to witness. Although, sober at the time, sadly, both our brothers, who are also father's died prematurely within eight months of each other, with Mike passing away at the beginning of August and Jamie last November. Both deaths happen so suddenly without warning so my family and I are moving through the process of grief as best as we can having also said good-bye to our parent's not too long before Jamie's death.
When I think of my brothers and their struggle, it is sad, very sad. Only through this experience have I come to realize the very real and devastating long-term impact that a life of substance abuse has on the human body and perhaps more poignantly on the loved one's who are impacted by someone's struggle to find help and embrace a life of recovery. I know that recovery works! While I was in College, our father, Al, went through treatment at Hazelden. I am proud to say that with the follow-up love & support our family gave him after treatment he reached 40 years of sobriety by the time he passed away at 89 years of age in December of 2010. Yes, it is true, anyone can seek out the help they need to reinvent their lives and reclaim the gift of life that is meant to be for them as a person in touch with themselves and committed to living a life of sobriety. In fact, we all need to surround ourselves with good and strong resources; it is simply part of the life journey.
Today, I invite you to come join with me to kick up our heels and get busy with stepping out around the beautiful Lake of the Isles, part of the Grand Rounds scenery in Minneapolis to stand in solidarity with our friends and family to help sponsor the incredible recovery support network that Minnesota Recovery Connection (MRC) is providing to our local recovery community.
This year for my birthday (8/30) I hope that you, along with my family and friends will think about rallying behind me to help me reach my goal of raising $2,500 by September 15th. It would be great if you come join me at this special event that includes a brief program, music, The Walk, KARE 11 Health clinic van, a sizeable Health & Wellness Area, the Sassy Spoon and the Chef Shack Food trucks with lot's of fun people celebrating a glorious Fall day! I hope to see you there Saturday, 9/15/12, 9 am to 1 pm. And/or you can also make a generous contribution through this website day or night to support the incredible work of MRC in honor of or in memory of someone you love.
