BENEFITING: Brigham and Women's Hospital
ORGANIZER: Brigham and Women's Hospital
EVENT: 2017 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 17, 2017
When the Boston Marathon bombings occurred on April 15, 2013, I was deployed with my Navy Reserve Unit aboard the USS Ponce in the Persian Gulf; I remember seeing the tragedy unfold through the bits and pieces of news that we were receiving. As a Massachusetts native, I kept thinking how could this be happening at home in Boston?
One of many innocent bystanders critically injured at the finish line of the Boston Marathon that year was Gillian Reny. She was rushed to BWH, where doctors and nurses worked heroically to save her life and both of her legs. Fortunately, Gillian is on the road to recovery, but trauma care remains an under-recognized and under-funded medical discipline, despite the fact that it is the leading cause of death for people ages 1 to 44 and accounts for 41 million emergency room visits each year. The Gillian Reny Stepping Strong Center for Trauma Innovation aims to turn tragedy into hope for all trauma patients, with a goal of helping future patients like Gillian, who have suffered from the devastation of traumatic injuries and events.
As a Navy veteran and family member of several patients who have received exceptional medical care at BWH over the years, I feel the Stepping Strong Marathon Team provides an excellent opportunity for my running to have meaning and in a small way to give back and say thank you. That is why on April 17, 2017, I am running the 121st Boston Marathon to raise money for the Gillian Reny Stepping Strong Center for Trauma Innovation, an outstanding cause dedicated to turning tragedy into hope for civilians and veterans who have suffered from traumatic injuries and events.
I am actively training very hard for the race, but I can’t succeed alone. I need your help to reach my fundraising goal of $9,000. I am counting on the support of my family and friends not only to finish the race, but also to help the Stepping Strong Center achieve its goal of transforming trauma care. You can learn more about the center at BWHsteppingstrong.org.
I hope I can count on you to support my Boston Marathon run by contributing to this very special cause. BWH is a non-profit, 501c3 charitable institution. All donations are 100% tax deductible.
Thank you very much for your time and consideration for this important cause. Together we can inspire hope and transform outcomes for civilians and veterans who have suffered from traumatic injuries and events.
