Steps Forward for the Philippines is a charitable fund created by American Ballet Theatre Soloist Stella Abrera. It is dedicated to serving the educational and creative needs of the children affected by Super Typhoon Haiyan.
Super Typhoon Haiyan, the most powerful storm in recorded history ever to make landfall, ripped through central Philippines on November 8, 2013. The storm affected 16 million people (including 5.9 million children), leaving 6,300 dead and four million displaced. Recovery efforts are progressing slowly in the impacted region, but conditions for education are poor. Classes are often held in overcrowded, leaky tents, and school supplies are scarce. Child labor rates in the area are on the rise, in large part due to this lack of educational access.
I created Steps Forward for the Philippines, in partnership with Operation USA, to respond to the urgent need for educational access in Guiuan, the coastal municipality hit first and hardest by Haiyan. Operation USA is on the ground helping with the relief efforts in the region, which include the building of quality infrastructure. The goal of Steps Forward for the Philippines is to raise $30,000, which will directly provide educational tools and equipment for the children of Guiuan.
This September, I will appear as a guest artist with Ballet Philippines, performing the title role in Giselle alongside ABT principal dancer, James Whiteside. Our show will be held in Manila's Cultural Center for the Philippines. I am honored and excited to work with the artists of BP and to dance, for the first time, in the country of my heritage. But the true highlight of my visit to the Philippines will come after the performance, when I travel to Guiuan to survey Operation USA’s educational initiatives and present the local children with educational supplies.
Please join me! Let's help the children of Guiuan take steps forward into a bright future.
Thank you (and salamat),
