Step Up 4 Armadale - Phase 3
Organized by: Step Up 4 Armadale
On the 22nd of May 2009, a fire at the Armadale Juvenile Correctional Centre in St Anns, Jamaica. The fire consumed the lives of seven girls and left dozens more with severe emotional and psychological damage.
A number of the young women survivors have issues relating to nearly losing their lives in the fire; some suffer because of their physical wounds and severe skin burns, others are burdened by witnessing their friends burning to death. All identify deep emotional issues that have been amplified by the effects of the fire. These issues are still the cause of extreme challenges in their lives.
The reason we require your support is the girls have matured out of the care system, as they are now between the ages of eighteen to twenty two years old, they have outstanding legal issues relating to compensation as victims of the Fire, therefore there are no funds currently allocated to them for healing, via government departments or agencies.
The money we raise will greatly assist the girls receiving support from a wide cadre of qualified Behavioural Science professionals thereby contributing to the development of the girls, their infant children their families and the wider community. The money will help us carry out Phase III of this project, with the primary focus being on a series of four regional full day workshops accompanied by packages of individual sessions for each participant. These are to be conducted in the geographical areas which have the highest population of the Armadale survivors i.e. St Ann, St James, Kingston and St. Andrew, Jamaica.
The aim of this series of regional group offerings is to advance the young women’s ability to positively participate in:
- Health conscious life choices
- Promotion of the values which maintain personal health care as a life priority
- Healing of past physical and psychological traumas
- Employment and creating micro businesses
- Entrepreneurial Internships with local Artisans
- Financial Literacy
- Good Governance and Citizenship
- Creating communities to combat the isolation of being ex care leavers with the specific shared trauma of being victims of the Armadale Fire.
