THE STORY:

Stern Center for Language & Learning wrote -

Help raise money for our Scholarship Program by sponsoring a runner (or walker) in the 2013 Mad Marathon by making a donation to the Stern Center.  The Stern Center awarded over $120,000 in scholarships last year.  A scholarship allows a learner, who otherwise could not financially access our services, to receive a learning evaluation or customized instruction at a reduced rate.  This opportunity allows them to discover and build upon their learning strengths and achieve academic success.

We see over 900 learners annually and we would like to share the following story we recently received from a client:

As both his legal guardian and his educational advocate, I recently had a conversation with the school district administrator who first approved the funding that allowed our nephew to finally receive services at the Stern Center.  I shared my belief that without this intervention he would not have the credits necessary to graduate nor the skill set to pursue a vocation to help him transition successfully to adulthood...

...A records review and a comprehensive evaluation at the Stern Center followed and confirmed our belief that in addition to his emotional behavioral disability he had language and learning challenges as well.  Armed with recommendations from the Stern Center and support from Stern Center staff, we were able to effectively advocate and access appropriate services.  After 5 years of academic failure, he could finally attend both his therapeutic day program and Stern to have both his learning disabilities and his emotional challenges addressed.

There is so much more that I could share about our time under the Stern Center umbrella.  Parents and guardians of emotionally and behaviorally challenged children often report that service providers marginalize them and respond to them in judgmental ways that further bias and shame.  Children are also made to feel that their potential is limited.  Having been our nephew’s guardians for over a decade, across multiple environments, it is important to share that this has never occurred during the years that the Stern Center has been part of the education team.

Of significant benefit to not only us as his guardians but also to his clinical treatment team was the documentation provided by the Stern Center that allowed us to track his daily progress.  When there was difficulty we knew it and could appropriately respond.  When there were successes they too were shared and reinforced.  Our nephew gained self confidence in himself not only thanks to improvements academically but through the respect and encouragement given to him for his strengths artistically and athletically.

When he decided to teach himself the Greek alphabet it was not part of his academic programming but it was encouraged and integrated.  He taught himself calligraphy after a Stern instructor shared his interest in it.  At Stern, he was never physically restrained or secluded; the number of days he was sent home without receiving academic instruction due to behavioral challenges was reduced by approximately 91%.

The Stern Center is where he has achieved great success; it is where he gained a stronger foundation on which to begin his transition to adulthood.
