THE STORY:

On April 19, 1995, just one day after Cimarron (the older of my two daughters) turned six years old, a bomb tore through downtown Oklahoma City. Having just returned home from a shopping trip, three-year-old Caramia and I were in our driveway, less than four miles from the bombing site; but because we were in a car with the windows rolled down we had the unique experience of not really feeling the impact, yet hearing the full sound – a loud, deep, constant, rumble of thunder that seemed to go on forever in that bluebird blue sky. For almost a year after that, whenever it thundered, my three-year-old daughter would tip her head to the side and listen; then, out loud but to herself, she would say, “It okay; it not a bomb”.
On April 26, 2015 I will attempt my first full marathon; and somewhere cheering me on will not only be my husband and my two daughters with their husbands, but my first grandchild, two-month-old, Salvatore. I run in memory of all those who were lost that day, in support of all those whose lives were changed forever, and in prayer that neither Salvatore nor any other child will ever have to stop and ask himself, “Is it okay, or is it a bomb?”
