"Do you think I can go to college?"
This was one of the first questions posed to me by my mentee, Warren. Since it was our first time meeting, I quickly responded in the affirmative, hoping to make a good impression. Though his face beamed with joy, I suddenly noticed a sinking feeling in my chest. Recognizing the odds were against him, I began to wonder if I was truly prepared for what was ahead.
That conversation took place almost four years ago. I am happy to note that he has been accepted into 4 colleges, and is on track to making a huge impact in the world! It was not an easy journey, but Warren's resilience and determination resulted in achievements that others thought were impossible (he received three awards last year!!).
I am saddened that our formal relationship is terminating due to his upcoming graduation; however, I am confident that we will continue to learn from one another as he moves on to the next stage of his life. Let's go Warren!
