THE STORY:

ST TAMMANY HUMANE SOCIETY wrote -

JOIN OUR FUNDRAISING TEAM & HELP US REACH OUR GOAL!

Founded in 1953, the St. Tammany Humane Society is one of the largest 501(c)(3), non-profit, non-governmental animal welfare organizations in Louisiana. We are passionately committed to the health and wellbeing of the Gulf Coast region’s abused, ailing and abandoned companion animals. Our mission is to save and enhance their lives by providing them with veterinary care, including spaying and neutering, sheltering and fostering, and eventual placement in permanent adoptive homes.

In February 2015, we launched our “SAVE A HEART” campaign to raise funds for the treatment of heartworm positive dogs that otherwise would not be eligible for our adoption program. Because heartworm disease is now prevalent in all 50 states, prevention is a dog’s only defense. Once infected, a treatment called Immiticide is the sole solution to saving an infected dog’s life. The problem facing not-for-profit organizations like ours? The high, combined costs of treatment (app. $600 per dog) that prevents us from admitting more than ONE heartworm positive dog into our adoption program each month.

With the numbers of heartworm positive dogs on the rise, that single number ONE is simply not good enough. The more funding we receive, the more heartworm positive dogs can be taken into our care, treated and fostered, then ultimately placed in forever homes. The more funding we receive, the fewer heartworm positive dogs will have to be turned away from our program because no one cared enough to protect them against this deadly disease.

Hopefully, with the exposure allowed us here by the Michelson Found Animals Saving Pets Challenge, the possibility of a grant, and the generosity of compassionate animal lovers everywhere, we can remain true to our mission. We will gratefully commit every dollar we receive to admitting more and more heartworm positive dogs into our adoption program. And then, once they are well again, we will happily provide them with a second chance at living long, healthy lives in the safety of warm, loving homes.
