THE STORY:

Yael Bortnick wrote -

The last week has been a trying time for many Americans from across the political spectrum – one that has left a great uncertainty about the direction of the country we all love.

At the heart of this uncertainty has been the acceptance of or apathy toward overt intolerance and bigotry perpetrated by the highest levels of our emerging government and targeted at our most vulnerable fellow citizens. But that is only half the story (~47% of it to be exact).

Also out of this uncertainty has come an outpouring activism and support – push-back not because a candidate lost an election but because core American values – and, at times the safety of particular American citizens - are being threatened.

In that light, we would like to invite you to join us in showing support for local refugee families who have settled in the Silver Spring, Maryland area. We are hoping this small gesture of support will help tell the refugee community that they are not only welcomed and valued in our community but that we look forward them being a part of our collective American future.

WHEN: December 7, 2016 from 5pm – 9pm

WHERE: Vinoteca Wine Bar (1940 11th St NW, Washington, DC 20001 – corner of 11th and U St. next to Solly’s)

HOW IT WORKS: Everyone who makes a donation online or at the door will get happy hour drink specials from 5-9 pm.

WHAT IT SUPPORTS: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) in Silver Spring. The International Rescue Committee, founded in 1933 by Albert Einstein, has offices in 26 cities in the U.S., including Baltimore and Silver Spring in Maryland. It’s a refugee resettlement agency contracted by the State Department to aid those legally allowed to enter the country.   The IRC works with the State Department and local and state agencies to place refugees in welcoming communities. About 350 refugees are resettled in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties each fiscal year (Oct. 1 – Sept. 30); about 400-600 others are granted political asylum in the two counties each fiscal year. To learn more about the work of the IRC, please click here.

A note on the title of this event: The title of this event – still we rise – comes from a Maya Angelou poem we love called “Still I Rise.”
