22,464 Hours on the Bus: Maria's Work and Her Stolen Future
Organized by: Tiffany Waugh
It’s been a while since we’ve last updated you on Maria’s situation and the fundraiser. We apologize for the lack of communication since our initial posting, but we have good news and are now very proud to report that due to each of your kind hearted and generous contributions...along with a bit of our own…a life has been changed.
Maria is no longer spending six hours of her life a day wasted on a bus ride to and from long days of work. In the midst of so much darkness she has experienced in her life of late each of you has provided a ray of hope. Instead of coming home only to eat and then sleep for the next day’s work, she now enjoys what we are so fortunate to benefit from – a precious few hours a day to have for herself, her family, her friends – time to have a life; a gift beyond any purchase.
After a rigorous search and several test drives we secured Maria a terrific vehicle; a 2003 Honda Accord in great condition with only 86,000 miles from a fantastic former owner, Todd Dunivant, who just so happens to be a Major League soccer player for the Los Angeles Galaxy! He was looking for a new home for what was his first car, and, after hearing Maria’s story, he knocked off $400. After a diagnostic at the local mechanic to ensure safety and condition, the car passed with flying colors. A total of $6000 went in for the car, taxes, title change, a new timing belt, inspection, etc. We paid for the car and transferred the title. It is now in Maria’s name.
The look on her face when surprised with her new Honda was illumination – a shock of luminous joy, part disbelief and part delirium… an unmitigated certainty that there is good in the world and that kindness pervades. That reaction is due to each of you. It is the same reaction we had each time one of your donations was added to the total. Happiness to see so much care and kindness from people who do not know Maria at all and only knew they wanted to help a fellow human in need.
And! This fundraiser has been like a gift that keeps on keeping on! The link reached an attorney who practices law in Mexico. He has very generously offered his time for her case-pro bono.
We deeply appreciate what you’ve donated and done for a truly wonderful person; moreover, Maria appreciates it and wishes to thank every one of you. You have changed her life.
Uploaded are pictures of the car on the moment of purchase. It’s a pleasure seeing Maria driving it.
Thank you all for your support and generosity…
